High School Student Advances to National Science Fair with Research from Professor Liu's Laboratory

April 1, 2015

Laan Yueng, senior at West Lafayette High School, was introduced to Dr. Julie Liu's laboratory through Project SEED in the summer of 2014. Since then she has taken what she learned in the laboratory and created a highly successful science fair project.

Yueng presented her research at the Siemens Competition in Math Science and Technology in fall of 2014, and was selected as one of three hundred national semifinalists.

She also presented her research at the Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair in March of this year, and was awarded the ASM Materials Education Foundation Award for most outstanding project making use of the concepts of materials science, the College of Science's 2nd place Dean's Award for Physical Sciences in the Senior(12th grade) Division, the College of Science's Interdisciplinary Research Prize, and the ISEF Engineering: Materials & Bioengineering Senior Division Gold Award.

She was selected as one of ten finalists to move on to the state level Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair where she earned 2nd place in the 12th grade division. She will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair held in Pittsburgh on May 10th.

Project SEED is a program that gives high school students the opportunity to explore careers in science by partnering them with scientist mentors. The program is supported by the American Chemical Society.
