Study Abroad Student Testimonial

Matt Pharris | Ireland

Internship | Ft. Wayne Metals

What did you work on during your internship with FWM?
I tested Nitinol and various stainless steel alloys for use in medical-grade wire and designed commercial processes for wire coatings. These products will become cardiovascular stents, pacemaker leads, etc.

Why is it valuable for students to have an international study and work experience?
Engineering is a people business, especially for a biomedical engineer.  The role demands that one speak intelligently with physicians, customers, and patients in need.  Communication is an essential but acquired skill, and the chance to work with people of drastically different backgrounds and world views certainly helps to accelerate that process.  Studying and working abroad gave me that opportunity.

What were your top “take-aways” from both the experience of studying abroad at NUIG and working at Fort Wayne Metals?
"Take-aways" include a range of international business and personal connections, as well as a better understanding of certain international attitudes in the workplace.  I am much more confident with the prospect of relocating to begin my career.  It's easy to think I can meet people, find my way around a new place, and be successful, all because I've done it before.

What can a study abroad student bring to an international internship?
Generally, I would say international interns begin their experiences with higher expectations and goals than the typical/local summer employee, so they have immense potential to re-energize and diversify the firm's team of interns.  Plus, those interns who eventually return to their home countries will be sure to talk about their time abroad and what a positive experience one can have while training in a foreign country. It's great for PR!

Anything else you'd like to add?
Every day in Ireland is a memorable one. Besides being able to take trips to Dublin, Liverpool, Munich, and Barcelona, just being at work is an incredibly international experience.
