College of Engineering/Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) General Education Program
General Education Policy
- College of Engineering students are required to complete 18 credit hours of approved general education courses.
- The ethics elective (PHIL 270 or PHIL 280) is required in the BME curriculum and is included as a general education course.
- At least 9 credit hours of global/societal/contemporary (GSC) issues must be taken. GSC courses are any courses in Agricultural Economics (AGEC), Communication (COM), Economics (ECON), Foreign Languages and Literature (FLL), Arabic (ARAB), Chinese (CHNS), French (FR), German (GER), Greek (GREK), Hebrew (HEBR), Italian (ITAL), Japanese (JPNS), Latin (LATN), Portuguese (PTGS), Russian (RUSS), Spanish (SPAN), History (HIST), Interdisciplinary Studies (IDIS), Philosophy (PHIL), Political Science (POL), Psychology (PSY), Anthropology (ANTH), and Sociology (SOC).

At least 6 credit hours must be taken and no more than 12 credit hours may be taken in one department.
- All Foreign Languages (FLL) and Classics (CLCS) are in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature
- A&D, DANC, MUS, and THTR are in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts
- ASL and SLHS are in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
- SOC and ANTH are in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
- At least 6 credit hours of non-introductory courses must be taken.
- If a foreign language is taken, at least 6 credit hours are required in the same language. Credit is not allowed for language courses in the student's native tongue(s), but literature, culture, drama and related courses are allowed.
- BME students may petition the BME undergraduate academic adviser for permission to use courses not appearing on this list. Permission must be obtained before taking the course in question.
