ABSTRACT

Advance manufacturing techniques have been suggested for the manufacturing of reactor pressure vessels (RPV) of Light Water Reactors and Gem IV reactors. Processing methods such as Powder Metallurgy with Hot Isostatic Pressing (PM-HIP) has been suggested as one of these methods. These alloys present promising reductions in manufacturing times and costs while maintaining structural and mechanical properties. However, irradiation effects on PM-HIP steels have not been thoroughly studied as of yet and therefore, have not been approved for use by the Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC). It is essential to investigate and understand the evolution of PM-HIP alloy’s properties under irradiation in order to assess in the nuclear energy sector. This work will review the current state of literature revolving around irradiated PM-HIP low alloy steels such as SA508 and compare their evolution under irradiation to conventionally forged counterparts. Changes in the irradiated microstructure will be examined, but the primary focus will be on analyzing the effects of irradiation on mechanical properties such as radiation-induced hardening and embrittlement within PM-HIP low alloy steels.
