The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. The prime goal of the Materials Reliability Department is to ensure that effective materials-related information is provided to customers who design and field high-consequence hardware, such that long-term reliability will be attained. Our department's R&D activities focus on the needs of Sandia's Nuclear Weapons program customers. We also provide support to customers in other areas including Energy and Environment and National Security Programs. We have expertise in gas/solid interactions, corrosion and electrochemistry, and the aging and mechanical properties of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. We provide this expertise and support to our customers during all phases of design, production, storage, use, and retirement.
R&D in the area of the mechanical behavior of brittle materials, including structural and electronic ceramics, glasses, and composites. The position includes the evaluation, development, and implementation of techniques to measure relevant materials properties, incorporating these properties into analytical and numerical models, and the assessment and interpretation of the results. The position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to broaden his/her exposure to ceramics and other brittle materials, and to utilize state-of-the art materials characterization tools, while working on R&D and problems relevant to national security.
- A recent Ph.D. in materials, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experimental and modeling experience in the area of mechanical properties of ceramics or other brittle materials.
- Demonstrated complex problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to interface with a variety of internal and external collaborators on various projects.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Experience with the following:
- Glass to metal sealing
- Ceramic processing
- Residual stress determination
- Fractography and failure analyses techniques
- Finite element analysis
- Undergrad GPA 3.2 and above, grad GPA of 3.5 and above.
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level security clearance.
Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
