Faculty Awards

Three of our faculty members have been honored with awards in the past year. Dr. Ernest (Chip) Blatchley III was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering, Dr. Loring (Larry) Nies was inducted into the Book of Great Teachers at Purdue University, and John W. Sutherland received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award.

Dr. Ernest (Chip) Blatchley III has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). Recognition as an ASCE fellow is bestowed on those who have made significant technical or professional contributions to the profession. Dr. Blatchley has made significant contributions to disinfection processes, with applications to drinking water, wastewater treatment, and swimming pool chemistry.

Dr. Loring (Larry) Nies has been inducted into the Book of Great Teachers at Purdue University. The Book of Great Teachers, a permanent wall display in the west foyer of the Purdue Memorial Union, bears the names of past and present faculty members who have devoted their lives to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Honorees include past recipients of university-wide teaching excellence awards and those nominated by students, alumni, and colleagues.

John W. Sutherland, Professor and Fehsenfeld Family Head of Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University, is the recipient of the 2013 American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award. The Ennor Award is one of the most prestigious awards in manufacturing and recognizes individuals or teams for developing or contributing significantly to an innovative manufacturing technology. Dr. Sutherland was selected for “his leadership and pioneering contributions in the development of dry or nearly dry machining technology, the characterization of environmental performance of manufacturing processes, and the creation of methodologies to promote remanufacturing and recycling of end-of-life products”.
