Unique Exchange/Skype/Email usernames

A person can have a career account username (also called "alias"), Exchange account username, and custom "vanity" email address that do not match each other.  As a result, it can be difficult to know which one to use when logging in to various systems.

A person's career account username is the username that they will use for logging into ECN and ITaP computers, OnePurdue SAP, Blackboard, and more.  The easiest way to confirm a username is through https://www.purdue.edu/directory/ or through the "ph" command at a terminal.  Using "ph <name> return all" or the online directory search will provide it as the "alias" field.  If things are working correctly, a person should be able to be emailed at their <alias>@purdue.edu email address.

A person's "vanity" email address is an email address that they (or a proxy) can specify via https://directory.purdue.edu/perl/nph-update.pl? and then clicking "Change email".  It can be looked up using https://www.purdue.edu/directory/ or through the "ph" command at a terminal.  Using "ph <name> return all" or the online directory search will provide it as the "email" field.

A person's Exchange email address is set by an Exchange administrator.  By default, it should be their career account username.  However, some people (particularly those who have been with Purdue for more than 15 years or were with a smaller departmental IT department) have been given different Exchange email addresses.  The most reliable way to check on this is by looking at their "E-mail" entry under the "General" tab in their Active Directory user object.  If Active Directory is not readily available, you can look the person up in Outlook, open the Outlook Properties for that user, go to the "E-mail Addresses" tab, and look at the "SMTP:" entry in all caps.

When trying to set up Outlook, a person will need to use their Exchange email address when asked for the email address they want to open, and "onepurdue\<career account username>" for their username.

Then trying to use Skype, a person needs to use their career account @purdue.edu as their email address.  If skype still is not working, it is possible that they still need to enable their Office365 account at https://www.purdue.edu/apps/account/Office365Status - this will take up to an hour to get updated.
