Troubleshooting: Connecting to Purdue Resources From Off-Campus

Some of Purdue's online services, including e-mail, newsgroups, and web pages, have special security requirement to prevent computers outside of Purdue's network from accessing them. If you have a Purdue login and password, you can use them to gain access to these resources.

To access @purdue.edu e-mail addresses, follow the instructions for setting up Secure SMTP Authentication on your mail client. The instructions are located at http://directory.purdue.edu/MAIL-HUB/clients/configure_mail_client.shtml

To use an @ecn.purdue.edu e-mail address, follow the instructions to Reconfigure Your Email Client for Secure Connections.

You can bypass the e-mail security issue by using ECN's Webmail to access your mail.

For Purdue newsgroups and protected web pages, you may have to set your computer up on a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN lets your computer join Purdue's own computer network using your login and password. ITaP has instructions for setting up a VPN on their website.
