Setting Up Apple Remote Access (ARA)

If you have Apple Remote Access (ARA) installed as part of Mac OS 8 or 9, the setup should go something like this:

- From the Apple Menu select Chooser and make sure the Active button next to the word AppleTalk is selected.
- From the Apple Menu, scroll your mouse over the Control Panels item, and make sure DialAssist, Modem, and Remote Access are present. In not, you may need to install software from your system CD.
- From the Apple Menu, scroll your mouse over the Control Panels item, and then select Remote Access.

- When the window opens, select the RemoteAccess menu, then scroll down and select Modem.

- Select which modem you have. If the modem came with the computer, consult the computer's documentation.
Note: if your modem is not one of the listed modems, you have System 7.6 or greater and you also have a valid modem script under the modem control panel, it is possible to use this modem script by by going to the Extensions folder and making a copy of your modem script and moving the copy from the Modem Scripts folder which is located in the Extensions folder into the Extensions folder.
- Select the port to which your modem is connected.
- If by chance you have a phone that uses pulses rather than tones, select Pulse under the Dialing option.
- Set Sound to Off.

- The following fields must be filled in:
Name - Your login name goes in this box.
(ex. ShmoeJ)
Password - Your password goes in this box.
(ex. mypassword)
Number - The dialup telephone number that you are using goes in this box.
(ex. 494-xxxx)
Note: Your ECN site specialist must set up your dial-in account to use ARA. Once your dial-in account is set up, the access telephone number can be obtained from your ecn site specialist.
- If you are using anything special to dial (different country, calling card, etc.) you will need to use DialAssist.
-First, select User Mode under the Edit menu.
- Set the user mode to Advanced, and click OK.
- Check the Use DialAsist checkbox.

- Select RemoteAccess, then DialAssist. You will then be presented with the DialAssist window.

- Type the City/Area Code you are dialing FROM.
- Select the Country you are dialing FROM.
- If you need to dial 8 or 9 to get to an outside line, select that in the Prefix pop-up menu.
- If you have long distance set up with AT&T, Sprint, or MCI, select the appropriate service provider under the Long Distance pop-up menu.
- If you have a credit card or calling card to bill the call to, select which one in the Suffix pop-up menu.

- If you are using anything special to dial (different country, calling card, etc.) you will need to use DialAssist.
- If any of the options you need are not available, click on any of the four buttons to customize DialAssist.
- Close the DialAssist window to save your changes.
- The number will be previewed in the Remote Access control panel. Type in the area code of the phone number that you are calling in the Area Code field under the Number field.
- You can set the redial and prompting connection preferences by clicking on the Options... button located at the bottom left-hand corner. Close your eyes, do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around, then click connect.
