Setting an Image as the Background

NOTE:

If you try and right-click an image in Netscape and select "Set as Wallpaper", Netscape will crash and disappear. Likewise, if you use Internet Explorer and choose "Set as Wallpaper", you will receive an "Access Denied" error message. Follow the steps below to circumvent these problems when trying to set an Internet image as your background.

Steps for Setting an Internet Image as Your Background

You may not wish to have the default image as your background. You may have a family picture or choose a picture from the internet to display as your background ("wallpaper").

1) Move your mouse to the image you like, then right-click. A menu will appear. Choose "Save Image As" (in Netscape) or "Save Picture As" (in Internet Explorer).

2) Next, you need to save the image. Select a destination on your R: drive. Be sure to note where you save the file!

3) If the image is *not* a bitmap image (.BMP file) and you are running Windows NT 4.0, you must convert your picture to a .BMP file. If you are running Windows 2000, you do not need to convert the image to a bitmap.

To convert:

a) Open Microsoft Photo Editor from Start->Programs->ECN Software->Microsoft Office (97 or 2000).

b) Open the image you saved.

c) Choose "Save As" and under "Save As Type", select "Windows Bitmap (.BMP)".

4) Right-click on the desktop (background) and choose "Properties" from the menu with a left-click. You will get a display that shows a minature screen. The picture below shows an example display using Windows NT.

5) Under "Background", click the "Browse" button and choose the image file (BMP for NT 4.0 or any other image for 2000). (You will need to change the location in "Look in" to be your R: drive.)

Click on "Apply". Then click on "OK".
