Remote Desktop Licensing (as of September 2021)

-- This is a rapidly evolving situation - details may vary at short notice --

Last updated: 11/4/2021

Who is covered by the campus license?

Faculty and Staff can use Remote Desktop (RDP) without charge.

Students can use RDP to connect to instructional machines clearly labeled for such use, available via the webpage http://eng.purdue.edu/jump/2e86d30

What if I want to use RDP to my research machine?

Any research machines needing RDP will need to have a license applied to it. This is per user, not per computer.

The cost at this time is $37/user/year. The license stipulation is for:

1. Students
2. Accessing a Microsoft Operating System
3. From a different computer

Students: To obtain and apply an RDP license to your machine, please provide the machine name, approval from your PI, and an account number for us to use to pay for the license.

Consider that this cost is still applicable whether or not the machine is managed by ECN or your group, and irrespective of whether you use 3rd party software like VNC, LogMeIn, Teamviewer, AnyDesk, etc.

We are not currently disabling previously granted RDP access until our audits are complete. You will have a chance to decide how to proceed at that time.

Why the sudden change in licensing?

Purdue was in the process of negotiating the re-addition of our RDP licenses to our campus agreement, when Microsoft relaxed the licensing for use while educational institutions were in the crux of the Covid-19 crisis. Now that the campus is back open, the special dispensations have ended. Unfortunately, the RDP licenses are not part of the agreement any more due to cost considerations.

Does ECN take pleasure in implementing these restrictions to RDP?

No. Software subscriptions create a great deal of administrative overhead (tracking, purchasing, applying licenses, auditing, recharging account numbers).. So, when we say we apologize for the (pricey) inconvenience, please know that we mean it sincerely.
