Powerpoint 2004/2008: Equations show up as black rectangles

When viewing a presentation using Powerpoint 2004/2008 that was created on a windows machine, sometimes embedded equations will not show up on the slides. They are replaced by black rectangles.

To solve this problem you must adjust a setting in your Mac's system preferences.

In the Finder window, under the Apple menu pull down to System Preferences.

In the top left under Personal, click on Appearance.

At the bottom of the window, click on the drop box next to Font Smoothing Style and select "Standard".

If Powerpoint is already running, quit and restart.

This should eliminate the black rectangles showing up in the equations and allow them to be seen as they are in Equation Editor or MathType.
