PINE: Receiving and reading email

One key activity in PINE will be reading any mail that you receive. This is done by using an option called the INDEX. You can activate the index by pressing the "i" key. Any mail that is in your inbox will be listed in order of date and time received. If you have never looked at the mail you will see an N before the message number indicating that this message has never been read. Once you read the message the N goes away. Take a look at a sample index screen from a user that occasionally gets mail.

Here is a summary of the codes you might see in front of messages:

A - for a message that you have responded to.

D - for a message that you have marked for deletion.

N - for a new message that you have never read.

Once you have entered the INDEX area of PINE you can use the arrow keys to highlight the message you wish to read. Press the RETURN key to view the content of the desired message.

Look at sample screen below and notice all of the options available for moving between screens and messages.
