OS X: Taking Screen Captures

How to Take Screenshots

  1. Entire Screen:
    Press ⌘ Command + Shift + 3.
    Saved as "Screenshot [YYYY-MM-DD] at [HH.MM.SS AM/PM].heic" (e.g., Screenshot 2025-09-15 at 2.30.00 PM.heic).

  2. Part of the Screen:
    Press ⌘ Command + Shift + 4 → Drag to select an area.

  3. A Window/Menu:

    • Press ⌘ Command + Shift + 4 → Tap Spacebar → Click the window/menu.


Where Screenshots Go

  • Default Location: Desktop.

  • Naming: Automatically uses the date + time format (no more "Picture 1" names).

  • Change Location:
    Press ⌘ Command + Shift + 5 → Click Options → Pick a folder.


Quick Edits & Sharing

After taking a screenshot:

  • Click the thumbnail in the corner to crop, draw, or share.

  • Press ⌘ Command + C to copy it instantly.
