Netscape 4.x: Setting Up Netscape E-Mail

Disclaimer: The information in this article is not guaranteed by Purdue University or the Engineering Computer Network. ECN does not actively support any version of Netscape prior to version 7. If this article is inaccurate, please contact us using the link at the bottom of this page so we can remove it.

The procedure for configuring netscape's mail client is as follows:

Go to the drop-down menu at the top of the browser window and select edit, move down the menu that appears and click on Preferences.

In the preferences window that appears travel down the menu on the left side, select the heading labeled "Mail & News Groups" select the subheading entitled "Identity". Then insert your user information into the corresponding spaces on the right.

The next step is to configure the correct mail server settings. You may either select POP or IMAP as the server type. The difference being that POP will remove all of your messages from the server and IMAP will leave them on allowing you to collect them again at a different time and location. This FAQ recommends that users select IMAP.

Under most circumstances the server that holds your ECN home directory should be selected for your 1. If that does not work please try an IMAP enabled server from the list below:

In the mail server preferences window set the mailserver that you want to use for out going mail; incoming and outgoing mail servers should be the same. Your user name corresponds to the unique portion of your email address(i.e. pete@ecn.purdue.edu pete). Enter your 0 in the correct corresponding space. Next in this procedure is to ADD an incoming mail server. Click the add button in the upper right hand corner of the Mail Server Preferences window.

This is the window to add a mail server. Enter the correct mail server name. Select IMAP for the Server Type and enter the correct user name for that email server. You may check the boxes for password retention, interval mail checking and Autodownload of any new messages if you wish.
