NFS: Error - NFS-server not responding

The Network File System, or NFS, allows a workstation to perform transparent file access over the network. Using it, a workstation can operate on files that reside on a variety of servers, server architectures and across a variety of operating systems.

If you receive an error in your console window that says something like:

nfs server ups not responding still trying
it means that the server (host), ups, that is providing NFS service to your workstation is down or is "off the net" momentarily. Your workstation has noticed that the server went down and is informing you of this.

This is not usually cause for alarm. The server will come back up without any special action required by the user.

If you are trying to write out a file (e.g., saving a file in emacs), you may be temporarily unable to do so. As soon as the server is back up, you should be able to resume your work.

Servers usually are able to come back up in about 15 minutes. If you are experiencing a longer down time, contact your Site Specialist.

When the server does come back "onto the net", you will receive a message in your console window that looks like this:

	nfs server ups ok
