Mighty Mouse Cleaning

Listed here are various procedures and notes on how to clean your Mighty Mouse's scroll ball if and when it becomes unusable.

Please note: The electronics below the scroll ball are very sensitive and may be damaged if proper care is not taken.

If available, we recommend the high-pressure air method for cleaning the Mighty Mouse scroll ball. Note that this does not include canned, compressed air so availability of appropriate tools may be limited. Simply direct the air stream onto the scroll ball to dislodge any particles that may have built up. It may help to turn the mouse over for particles to fall out.

For reference, here is Apple's official support document on the topic (includes demonstration video):

Do:

  • Unplug it.
  • Use a lint-free cloth, such as a clean t-shirt or special cloth.
  • Use glass cleaner in small amounts. The extra additives are helpful in cutting grease.
  • Use high pressure air (not canned) to blow the gunk out of the scroll ball assembly.

Don't:

  • Don't use isopropyl alcohol, as it does not remove grease.
  • Don't use cotton swabs, tissues, q-tips, etc. These can all deposit lint inside of the scroll ball assembly.
  • Don't use compressed air. The cold blasts can damage the fragile internal components.
