How do I install the LPR client for printing to UNIX printers?

Summary

In order to print to a printer spooled on a UNIX host, you must use the LPR print client. This document explains how to install the LPR client for Windows 2000.

Installation

You must have administrative privileges on your machine to install the client.

To install the client, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel under the Start->Settings menu.
  2. Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button.
  3. In the Windows Components Wizard, find the item labelled Other Network File and Print Services and select it.
  4. Click Details.
  5. In the Other Network File and Print Services dialog, check the box next to Print Services for UNIX and click OK.
  6. Click Next when returned to the Windows Components Wizard dialog. The component will install. If prompted for the Windows 2000 CD-ROM, click OK and set the Copy files from location to \\ad.ecn.purdue.edu\DFS\ECN\OS\win2k\<version>\i386 where <version> is professional or server and click OK.
  7. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
  8. Click Close to close Add/Remove Programs.
At this point, you should be able to create a new LPR port when you setup a printer.
