Fugu: How do I use it?

Purdue Engineering Computer Network

Fugu is an SFTP application from the University of Michigan that is free to download. SFTP is a secure implementation replacing the insecure FTP protocol. Fugu also has the ability to instigate SSH tunnels and SCP file transfers. You should use SFTP whenever possible. All ECN servers have SFTP enabled.
  1. First, download Fugu here. The download will be a gzip'ed .dmg file that StuffIt Expander can decompress (if it doesn't automatically). After it is decompressed, open the mounted Fugu disk and you will find the Fugu application. See Fig. 1.

  2. Drag the application to your Applications folder to save it.
  3. Open Fugu, and you will see the main connection window. From here you can navigate your local directories and connect to your remote SFTP server. See Fig. 2.

  4. To connect to an SFTP host, enter the server and your account name, as well as any port and/or path, if needed. See Fig. 3.

  5. After you are connected to the server, it will request your password. If you check Add password to keychain you won't have to enter in on subsequent connections, as long as you are using the same OS X account. See Fig. 4.

  6. Once you are authenticated, you can navigate the remote directory exactly like you can your local directory. Moving files back and forth can be accomplished with drag-and-drop. See Fig. 5.
