Entourage: Accessing Exchange Accounts with Entourage v.X
There is an alternate FAQ if you are looking to access Exchange accounts with Entourage 2004 (part of Microsoft Office 2004.).
With Purdue's upgrade to Exchange Server 2003, it is now possible to use Microsoft Entourage v.X to access your Purdue Exchange account. First, however, we must upgrade Entourage to version 10.1.5. A series of updates are available from Microsoft's Mactopia site (they must be applied sequentially):
- Office v.X 10.1.2 Update (includes previous updates)
- Exchange Update (10.1.4) (includes 10.1.3 udpate)
- Office v.X 10.1.5 Update
Next, we'll edit some general settings in Entourage. Open Entourage if it's not already and select Entourage
> General Preferences...
(or type command-;). Under the Calendar section, find the Default time zone for new events: popup and select Indiana (East)
. Click OK to save your settings. See Fig. 1.
Fig. 1
Now select Tools
> Accounts
. Click the Exchange section, and look at the list below - it should be empty. If it's not, you may want to remove older accounts so you don't get them confused. Click New at the top of the window. This will start the Exchange account creation process for Entourage. At the bottom of the window that appears, click Configure account manually. See Figs. 2 and 3.

Fig. 3
Now let's enter information about the account (see Fig. 4):
Account name: Any name you like, but something easy to recognize, likeITaP Exchange Account
.
Account ID: Your username, likejonest
.
Password: Enter it here unless you don't want it to remember it. If you do, check Save password in Mac OS keychain so it will remember it for you.
Domain:ONEPURDUE
Exchange server:exch.itap.purdue.edu
Name: Your full name, such asTimothy R. Jones
.
Email address: Your full email address, such asjonest@exchange.purdue.edu
; make sure you include theexchange
subdomain.
Fig. 4
Next, click on the Mail section and add this information (see Fig. 5):
- Make sure Include this account in my "Send & Receive All" schedule is checked.
- Click on Click here for advanced receiving options:
- This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL) (#1) should be checked.
- Automatically synchronize Inbox with the Exchange server (#4) should be checked.
- Check for unread messages in all folders (#6) should be checked.
- All other checkboxes should remain unchecked. Close the advanced receiving options window.
- Under Sending mail, the SMTP server should be
smtp.purdue.edu
. - Click on Click here for advanced sending options:
- Everything should be unchecked (you may have to uncheck SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL))
Note: Although we need to disable SMTP authentication for this to work correctly, Purdue's mail servers do not allow mail relaying (sending an email to a non-purdue.edu address. Therefore, to avoid problems when sending mail from off-campus (like at home or on the road), you should first connect to Purdue's VPN service before starting Entourage.
Fig. 5
Now click on the Directory section and add this information (see Fig. 6):
LDAP server:1061cendc01.central.purdue.edu
Search base:ou=departments,dc=central,dc=purdue,dc=lcl
Fig. 6
Lastly, click on the Advanced section and change these settings (see Fig. 7):
Free/Busy server:exch.itap.purdue.edu/public
Synchronize all items to server should be selected.
DAV service requires secure connection (SSL) should be checked.
Fig. 7
Now, click OK. At this point Entourage will connect to Purdue's Exchange server and test the settings you have entered. If you left the password blank during setup then you will be asked for it. If everything goes well, you will see another account listed on the left pane of your Entourage window with your account name. There will be several items listed in the accounts. See Fig. 8.
Fig. 8
It may take a few minutes to sync all of your calendar and mail items - please be patient while Entourage catches up. After it's done (look at the window's footer for status information), everything should be set up. You can send and receive mail with both Entourage and Outlook Web Access, and create calendar entries in both environments. If you wish to view public calendars, however, those must be accessed via Outlook Web Access.
