ITaP VPN - Manual Setup via L2TP (Mac)
Configure and Use L2TP on Mac OS X
Mac OS X includes a native VPN client. You can use the Mac OS X VPN client to make an L2TP VPN connection to a Firebox.
Configure the L2TP Network Settings
To prepare a Mac OS X device to make an L2TP VPN connection, you must configure the L2TP connection in the network settings.
- In the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
- Click the Network icon.
- Click the "+" icon in the lower left corner to create a new network interface.
- In the Interface drop-down list, select VPN.
- From the VPN Type drop-down list, select L2TP over IPSec.
- In the Service Name text box, type a name for this VPN connection, such as "Purdue VPN ".
- Click Create. - The settings for the VPN connection appear.
- You now can create your own configuration, from the Configuration button, hit Add Configuration...
- In the Name field type PurdueVPN
- In the Server Address text box, type the IP address of l2tp.purdue.edu
- In the Account Name text box, type your career account
- Click Authentication Settings.
- In the Password text box, type your career account password, you can also leave this blank and you will be prompted for your password whe you connect.
- Select Shared Secret - In the Shared Secret text box, type the pre-shared key: PurdueVPN
- Click Apply to save the configuration changes.
Start the L2TP Connection
To start the L2TP connection:
- In the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
- Click the Network icon.
- Select the VPN connection you created in the Network dialog box.
- Click Connect.
- To make the connection easier to replicate in the future Click on the checkbox in the bottom of this panel "Show VPN status in menu bar".
- You should be able to start/reconnect the VPN connection from the Apple Menu from this point on.
- IF/when your career account password changes you'll need to follow these steps again but only 13 and 15 above if you entered a password in step 13.
After the VPN connection is started, the Connect button changes to Disconnect.
