Job Description

Agilent inspires and supports discoveries that advance the quality of life. We provide life science, diagnostic and applied market laboratories worldwide with instruments, services, consumables, applications and expertise. Agilent enables customers to gain the answers and insights they seek -- so they can do what they do best: improve the world around us. Information about Agilent is available at www.agilent.com.

This position is at our Little Falls, (Wilmington), Delaware site, located midway between Baltimore and Philadelphia. There, we have 800 people inventing, designing, building and marketing products that dominate the market for Chemical Analysis. Our products are frequently behind the headlines in the news, from environmental regulations to new drug discoveries to Homeland Security. You'll even see our instruments on television shows like "CSI".

As an Electrical Engineer in our R&D group, you'll be part of a team that analyze, design, prototype and test new products for Agilent's Gas Chromatograph, Automated Sample Handling and Automated Sample Preparation products. Most projects require mechanical, electrical and firmware engineers, as well as chemists and software engineers, to create a complete system. As part of those projects, you will also work with our marketing, manufacturing, purchasing and service organizations to transform your designs into shipping products.

Though you'll be part of a team, you will also be working independently and setting your own priorities. The scope and complexity of your projects will be based on your existing knowledge and capabilities as well as how fast you can acquire new skills.

Electrical/Firmware Engineers at our site work on digital and analog PC board designs, algorithms for control of motion, flow and heated zones, intelligent systems. You will work with Real time systems, FPGA programming and robotic systems as well as thermal and pneumatic controls. One example would be a chemical sensor and circuitry to sense femtoamps of current. Another would be a robotic system mainboard that uses an embedded processor, real-time operating system and FPGA's to control motion, sense inputs and communicate over a LAN.

Qualifications

A Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree or Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or the equivalent. Prior experience is preferred.

The ability to work in an interdisciplinary, cross-functional environment. We're also looking for someone with demonstrated skill and interest in two or more of the disciplines listed below.

  1. The ability to design, model and analyze analog circuitry using passive and active components. This includes DC and AC characteristics.
  2. The ability to design, model and analyze digital combinatorial and sequential circuits, including microprocessor and FPGA systems.
  3. A working knowledge of Robotic and motion control systems, motors, sensors and amplifiers.
  4. Experience with firmware programming, as demonstrated by developing and debugging code that controls hardware directly.   Examples of programming languages include microcontroller assembly and C.
  5. Experience digital programmable logic design using VHDL or Verilog.
  6. Familiarity with digital and analog control loops, including the ability to design and characterize them for stability.
  7. Familiarity with digital signal processing functions such as FIR filters, IIR filters and sampling theory.
Wants
Skill or experience in the following areas would be a plus, but aren't required. This list also gives an idea of the tools we use in our work.

  1. Experience with commercial software to control experimental hardware systems. Examples of software packages include C, C++ VEE or LabView.
  2. The ability to use CAD tools for design of mixed-signal PC boards. Examples include PSPICE, Xilinx, or Mentor Graphics DxDesigner
  3. The ability to model the characteristics of physical systems such as thermal or pneumatic.
  4. Knowledge or experience in EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) related areas.
