Research Activities on Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics at Pusan National University

In Korea, a total of 24 nuclear power plant (NPP) is operating and providing about 35% of total electricity demand. Among them, 6 PWR (Pressurized Nuclear Reactor) units are located at the Kori NPP site in Busan. In March 2011, nuclear engineering major was opened to not only provide high-quality students to the nuclear society but also support the regional safety of NPP as the fifth major of the school of mechanical engineering at PNU (Pusan National University) in Busan.
The presentation will introduce briefly research activities on the nuclear thermal hydraulics at PNU. The researches are mainly focused on the experimental works for both the development of thermal hydraulics model and the confirmation of design of safety features for newly developing advanced reactors. The subjects include condensations in a nearly horizontal pipe and outside wall of tube bundle for the passive safety systems, the CHF in the narrow rectangular channel under the steady and transient conditions for a research reactor, the subcooled boiling phenomena in the downward face heating rectangular channel simulating core catcher, the droplet parameters in the horizontal pipe, etc.
Dr. Yun received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea. He currently holds a position as a professor at Pusan National University in Mechanical Engineering.
He has experience with the leading of development of wall heat transfer package for the Korean safety analysis
code SPACE, and the development of two-phase flow instrumentations such as local conductance sensor, single- and multi-optical fiber sensor, impedance sensor, etc.
