Installing Microsoft Outlook 2001 on Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4

Note: Users are strongly encourage to use Microsoft Entourage, part of Microsoft Office 2004 instead of Microsoft Outlook 2001. Future releases of OS X will make it increasingly difficult to maintain compatibility between OS X and Outlook 2001. Microsoft Office 2004 is available to Purdue staff and faculty through Purdue's site license.

To install Outlook 2001 on your system, first download the application from the Microsoft web site. After the download finishes and the file expands, you will see the Outlook 2001 folder, which contains the application and support files. Add this to the home directory of your account. See Fig. 1.

In the Outlook Files folder within the Micrsoft Outlook 2001 folder, you will find the Outlook Settings application. Although it has an icon similar to a control panel, it's actually a separate application. Open the application. See Fig. 2.

Click New... to enter your Exchange account information. Enter the following information:

Name: Choose any name for the profile, eg. "Exchange".
Microsoft Exchange server: exch.itap.purdue.edu
Mailbox name: Enter your Purdue username.

When all the information is entered, click Test Settings. Outlook Settings will check with Purdue's Exchange server to verify the username. If more than one user is found, the application may ask you to pick which user you are. You should then receive a message indicating the test was a success. See Fig. 3

Before we open Outlook 2001, we need to move some files. This is essential for the installation to work. If this next step is ignored, there is a high probability that Outlook will not work for you. Start by navigating to the Outlook Files folder again (located within the Microsoft Outlook 2001 folder). You should find two preference files: Exchange Preferences and Outlook Services. Copy both of these files to the OS 9 Preferences directory, located at /System Folder/Preferences/. See Fig. 4

Once those files are copied, open Microsoft Outlook 2001 normally. It may ask you some questions about defaults and time zones. At this point, Outlook will operate normally.
