which hostname to use in the home page URL
First, you must have WWW installed on your host. All Solaris hosts have WWW installed. Hosts running SunOS will have WWW installed on a request basis. If you have a host that is running SunOS and you want WWW installed, just send a note to cathyc@ecn.purdue.edu and it will be put in your request. Usually WWW can be installed within a day.
Using the finger command you can obtain the hostname you need to use for your home page URL.
1. Finger your login by typing:
Depending on which machine you are on, you will receive:finger <login>
a) complete information; in which you see the section labeled
"Directory: /home/hostname/login"
Example:
OR:
Login name: cathyc In real life: Cathy L Curry
Office: MSEE 104, 49-45450 Home phone:
Directory: /home/harbor/a/cathyc Shell: /bin/csh
Affiliations: ECN Uid: 998
Expires: December 1999 Login group: other (1)
Department: Engineering Computer Network Classification: Staff
Member of groups: root, ecnstaff, moymac, ecnweb
Mail forwarded to cathyc@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu
Plan:
b) mail address only
Example:
Mail forwarded to cathyc@harbor.ecn.purdue.edu2. If you get the complete information (a):
under "Directory:/home/hostname/login", use this *hostname* in your home page URL.
3.. If you get the mail address only (b), then do another finger:
this will give you the complete information, in which you will see the section labeled "Directory: /home/hostname/login". Use this *hostname* in your URL.finger <login>@mailaddress
NOTE: On SunOS clients, the digit can be dropped and that will give you the correct hostname to use for your WWW/URL. For example, if jruser is at /home/zoo3/jruser, the hostname he will want in his URL will be *zoo*, NOT zoo3.
The URL to your home page is:
http://<home directory hostname>.ecn.purdue.edu/~<login>/
