NOTE: In order to add a printer, you must logon as the Administrator or someone with equivalent rights to add printers and you must have the Microsoft TCP/IP Printing Service installed.

Begin by selecting the START button in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop. This will display a list of available options. Next, select SETTINGS/PRINTERS. [Printers Control Panel]
Once you have selected PRINTERS, the Printers Control Panel window will appear. Double-click on the ADD PRINTER icon. [Add Printer]
The Add Printer Wizard Window will prompt you to install the printer either on your local system or network. You will want to install the printer on your local system. Make sure that MY COMPUTER is selected. [Add Printer Wizard/My Computer]
Click the NEXT button. The following windows will ask you to install the printer port. You will be using Samba, so click on the ADD PORT button. [Add Printer Port Window]
The Printer Ports Windows will appear. Select LPR PORT and click on the New Port button. [LPR Port Window]
The Add LPR compatible printer Window will appear. In the "Name or address of server providing lpd" field you will need to add the UNIX system that the printer is spooling off of. In the "Name of printer or print queue on that server" field enter the UNIX printer name. Once you have finished, click on "OK."
[Add LPR Compatible Printer]
NOTE: If you are not sure what the printer is spooling off of, use the GREP command in a UNIX Telnet Window. Example: /home/pier/e/kimberly>grep msa /etc/lp/printerhosts/ | more (RETURN) msa pier bsd (ANSWER)

You will be returned to the Printer Port Window. Click on the CLOSE button. This will return you to the Add Printer Port Window, as seen in the Add Printer Wizard figure above. Click the NEXT button. You will then be prompted to add a printer driver. Install the Apple LaserWriter IINTX V47.0 Driver. Once the printer driver has been installed, click the Next button. [Apple LaserWriter II NTX V47.0 Driver]
If the printer driver has never been installed, refer to the next section and image.

If the driver has been previously installed, you will be prompted to either keep the existing driver or replace it. I suggest selecting the "Keep existing driver (recommended)" toggle button. Once finished please click the NEXT button.

[Keep Existing Driver (Recommended)]
The next window will prompt you for the name of the printer. The default name will be the Apple LaserWriter IINTX V47.0. Change this to the UNIX name and possibly the location of the desired printer on campus. Click the NEXT button when you have finished naming the printer. [Printer Name]
The next window will prompt you for sharing the printer over the network. Verify that the printer is NOT SHARED. Make sure the NOT SHARED toggle button is selected, then click the Next button. [Not Shared]
The last window that will appear is the Test Page Window. If you would like to print a test page, select the "Yes (recommend)" toggle button. Click the NEXT button. [Test Page]
Once finished, you will be returned to the Printer Control Panel. If the printer driver hasn't been installed, you will be prompted for the Windows NT CD-ROM. Once the printer driver has been installed, the new printer will appear in the Printer Window.

If you the printer driver has been previously installed, you will be returned to the Printer Control Panel. If you have followed the instructions correctly, the new printer will appear in the Printer Control Window, as seen in the Printer figure above.

[Printer Control Panel Window]
If you would like to set the printer up as a default printer, select the printer, go to FILE to SET AS DEFAULT. This will set the printer as a default printer. Set as Default]

Once you have selected "Set As Default", you will be returned to the Printer Control Panel Window. You have now successfully installed a new printer using SAMBA.

NOTE: Please make sure you are using your UNIX login when logging on to Windows NT. Samba uses this logon to verify you as a valid user of the printer. If your Windows NT logon password is different then your UNIX account, you will be prompted for your UNIX password the first time you print. Please make sure you use your UNIX account password. If you do not, you will not be allowed to use the printer.
