The Integrated Power Systems group (Department 446) is supporting new technology development for the All Electric Navy and commercial applications. This technology is focused on electric drive propulsion, electric actuation, and advanced power systems, and all of this technology is part of the continuing trend in making ships more electric, more capable, and more affordable. The Integrated Power Systems group has resources specialized in power electronics, digital signal processing, adaptive filtering, embedded controls, electromechanical machines, linear and non-linear system theory, multivariable control systems and computer modeling and analysis to help integrate these technologies into submarines. There is specific expertise in the area of non-linear, dynamic analysis of advanced solid state power systems, including stability, transient, and frequency domain analysis of medium voltage, medium frequency systems that are different from any previous or existing submarine electrical system. Responsibilities include the design, development and analysis of advanced power electronic, feedback control systems and power system applications. Advanced power electronic applications include PWM power converters, electromagnetic machines, etc. Feedback control systems include linear PI control, adaptive regulators, etc. Power system applications include the integration of solid state power converters and rotating machinery in medium voltage systems. Advanced electromagnetic machines include quiet low speed high torque permanent magnet motors, linear motors, and high speed generators. Additional responsibilities include mathematical and computer analysis of advanced power electronics, linear and non-linear systems and power systems for performance predictions and problem resolution. Duties will also include prototype and test of scaled hardware in land based and at sea demonstrations.
