From Industry to Academia

Anelis Chiluisa

During my journey, I have acquired valuable knowledge and insights, having progressed from a position at a leading pharmaceutical company to pursuing a graduate degree in pharmaceutical concentration. My passion for this field has always been strong, and I have recognized the necessity of expanding my education to excel and develop a comprehensive understanding of the industry. My experience in the Professional Master's program at Purdue allowed me to sharpen my skills in the healthcare industry, while also providing opportunities for leadership and management development. As the President of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (IPSE), I have the privilege of connecting with industry leaders and students of all majors and levels who share a common passion for learning and growing their network in the healthcare sector. Additionally, my role as an events chair of the Professional Master’s Graduate Student Organization (PGSO) has enabled me to collaborate with like-minded students and faculty members, fostering my teamworking skill. While one might assume that a graduate program in the pharmaceutical industry would simply be a review of familiar concepts, I have found that to not be the case. Through this program, I have been introduced to new concepts and perspectives that have enabled me to approach problems in novel ways. One of my favorite classes, human anatomy for humanphysiology, was taught by the incredible Dr. Clark, who expanded my understanding of physiology and its applications within the industry. In addition to pharmaceutical knowledge, I also enrolled in an Operations Management course which provided valuable insights into how facilities operate and helped develop my business acumen. For those considering coming to Purdue, especially international students, I would highly recommend being open to meeting new people, establishing connections, and reaching out for help when needed. The environment at Purdue is inclusive and encourages diverse  ideas. Through this program, not only will you gain knowledge, but you will also develop valuable skills such as time management, leadership, and communication. If you are currently a working professional, pursuing a degree at Purdue can propel you to new heights in your career, bringing you closer to your goals.
