Meet Lakshmi!

Lakshmi Sai Jinca, M.S., Chemical Engineering and Management, August 2021

Having completed my undergraduate studies in chemical engineering and worked for 2 years in the pharmaceutical industry, I was drawn to Purdue's PMP course with data science concentration, which promised to provide me with the knowledge and skills I needed to excel in both fields. Throughout my academic journey, I immersed myself in the world of chemical engineering and data science.

Purdue's PMP program offered a unique blend of expertise that allowed me to explore new avenues and make meaningful contributions to my field. The rigorous curriculum in data science equipped me with the necessary tools to analyze complex datasets, while my foundation in chemical engineering provided a deep understanding of the industry.

One aspect that truly stood out during my time at Purdue was the accessibility of the professors. They were not only experts in their respective fields but also approachable mentors who encouraged critical thinking and provided invaluable guidance. Their mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping my perspective and boosting my confidence as I navigated through challenging coursework.

A significant milestone in my journey was the capstone project, where I conducted data-driven analysis to Bioprocessing industry for associated process safety hazards. This project allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and real-world applications, applying my knowledge in data analysis and chemical engineering to solve practical problems. The hands-on experience gained through the capstone project proved to be invaluable in preparing me for the professional world.

While pursuing my studies, one of the most advantageous aspects I found regarding the program was the emphasis placed on networking and building connections within the industry. Actively participating in industry events, conferences, and workshops provided me with opportunities to interact with professionals and experts in my field. I learned that nurturing professional relationships and leveraging them for personal growth and career advancement are key elements in achieving success.

Drawing from my 2.5 years of industry experience, I would recommend recent and potential graduates to not only showcase the skills and knowledge they acquired at Purdue to potential employers but also emphasize their potential to lead and effectively solve problems. Based on these learnings during my graduate experience, I envision myself leading teams and driving innovation to improve manufacturing processes and contribute to the advancement of the pharmaceutical industry.

Looking back, the decision to pursue a program that merged data science and chemical engineering has proved to be pivotal in my academic and professional growth. With the guidance of approachable professors, the challenges of the capstone project, and the opportunities for networking offered at Purdue, I am confident that this degree will provide you with knowledge beyond the classroom and bring you closer to realizing your career aspirations.
