The Honorable Robert L. Sumwalt
Member of the National Transportation Safety Board
National Transportation Safety Board Member Robert L. Sumwalt was sworn in as the 37th appointee to the five-member board in August 2006.
He served for 24 years as an airline pilot with Piedmont Airlines and US Airways, has served as a consultant to NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System and has written extensively on aviation safety matters.
Sumwalt received the Flight Safety Foundation’s Barbour Award in 2003 and ALPA’s Air Safety Award in 2005. He was inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame in 2009.
