Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

This section is prepared for the newsletter by Ms. Margaret Whelton, PE. She is the SEE Manager of Industrial Experience. The responsibilities of this position include working with industry to secure internships, co-ops, and full-time job opportunities for students; developing real world senior design and research projects; and facilitating partnerships between industry and Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering. She has twelve years of experience as a practicing environmental engineer prior to becoming part of SEE.  She is a registered professional engineer in Indiana, Virginia, and Alabama.

I know your time is limited, so I always recommend attending IR and the Civil Career Fair in the fall.  Go to the Ag Fair if you have time or you have a specific interest in working for ag companies.

Civil Engineering Career Fair (Oct 9th in person) will be held at the CoRec from 9am to 3pm. A list of companies attending can be found here.  It is not on the career fair plus app so you may want to do some additional research before you get to the fair.  This fair will mainly feature consulting firms and there will be EEE alums present. The CE Career Fair is generally the night before the career fair so October 8th in Hampton Hall.   No information is posted yet on the schedule or attendees for the info sessions. I’ll send you updates on the CE Career Fair closer to the event.

The Ag Fair is on Tuesday October 7th at the CoRec from 10:00am-3:00pm.   See who is attending here.  Please note the Ag Fair is also not on the career fair plus app. Anyone who makes something has an environmental need.  If you attend, I suggest you visit the companies that interest you.   Companies like John Deere, Cargill and Hormel have hired EEEs in the past.

Since the Ag Fair and CE Career Fair are during the same week, and you can only go to one, I suggest the CE Career for the number of companies relevant to EEEs.  If you want to work for an Ag company, the Ag fair is an excellent opportunity to connect with those types of companies.

The CCO has resources that can help you in the job search. They can review your resume, give a mock interview, and offer workshops to aid you in the process of looking for employment.  They also have information sessions listed that are scheduled through CCO.  Check here for all CCO related events on campus: https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Calendar    There are several sessions to improve your interviewing skills and there is a series of workshops specifically for international students. In particular there is a workshop in regard to visa options after graduation.  Company info sessions can also be found here.  In addition, there is an online session on 10/23 specifically for internships for Australia.   Those EEEs going study abroad to Australia should attend if possible.  Keep checking the CCO calendar for these and other events as it is continually updated.

Did you know you can even practice your interview skills at the CCO?  You can schedule a mock interview through them.  This is a great way to practice your sales pitch!  You can schedule a mock interview Monday to Friday during normal business hours here under “Undergraduates-Quick Chat-Peer Mock Interview”:  https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Students/WhatWeOffer  You can also do an interview via Big Interview virtually here.

Finally, if you are interested in graduate school, you should go to the Engineering Graduate Showcase (Sept 28th and 29th).  You need to register, but it is free to attend.  For those graduating soon, you don’t have to attend the entire event see links below for more details.

SEE Study Abroad

Interested in studying abroad? Here are the steps you should take:

Meet with the Purdue Study Abroad office FIRST!  See how you can connect with them at https://www.purdue.edu/gpp/sa/about/appointment.html

Visit the Engineering Study Abroad Course Equivalency Database

Read the Studying Abroad in SEE page.  This includes a link to the EEE Qualtrics info survey

Complete the EEE Qualtrics info survey – it is required before meeting with your EEE advisor or EEE liaison.  It was created to guide students through the basic study abroad resources prior to meeting with their advisor, with the hope that it helps students to be more aware of existing resources and empowers them long-term on how to find appropriate help. In addition, follow up meetings with the EEE advisor can now be less focused on the basics and more productive focusing on real needs and questions.

AFTER you’ve completed the survey, you can make an appt with Tammi or Maeve if you’d like to discuss how to optimize your plan of study to incorporate abroad courses.

Purdue Campus Sustainability Culture Assessment

As part of the Campus Sustainability Self-Study Project being led by Purdue University’s Institute for Sustainable Future, faculty, staff and grad students will be asked for feedback to enable the setting of benchmarks and guide future planning in areas related to campus sustainability. The “Purdue Campus Sustainability Culture Assessment" will be administered online from September 15 to September 26. The survey will not be sent to all emails, so we encourage you to participate by going to this link to take the survey.

LEED Green Associate Certification

EEE students should understand that LEED is one professional certification. Earning a PE license in engineering requires considerably more education, knowledge and experience, and all EEE graduates are qualified to eventually earn a PE license, which is significantly more valuable. On occasion, an EEE student will ask about LEED. LEED is more within the domain of the Arch Engr group within Civil. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential is the only entry level sustainability designation and shows employers and clients that you have certified knowledge in the green building industry. Most people can take a short course and pass the LEED certification test. As a courtesy, the following info is being provided. It is not required or necessarily endorsed.
