Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

This section is prepared for the newsletter by Ms. Margaret Whelton, PE.  She is the EEE Manager of Industrial Experience.  The responsibilities of this position include working with industry to secure internships, co-ops, and full time job opportunities for students; developing real world senior design and research projects; and facilitating partnerships between industry and Environmental and Ecological Engineering. She has twelve years of experience as a practicing environmental engineer prior to becoming part of EEE.  She is a registered professional engineer in Indiana, Virginia, and Alabama.

Next week will be busy job-opportunity wise!  Expo is Tuesday February 7th (CoRec from 8-3pm) and Feb 8th (virtual via Career Fair Plus app from 8am-3pm).  Interview slot restrictions lifted earlier this week and there are more opportunities to meet with the virtual companies.  In person seminars are Monday

Two companies will also be having info sessions just for EEEs!   Please come to the Cargill session (see flyer) on Monday Feb 6th at 4pm in WANG 2501 and the Hormel session (see flyer) with an EEE alumnus on Tuesday Feb 7th at 5:30pm in the Fu room (POTR 234).  It is ok if you have a class and will show up late or need to leave early.  Come when you can and bring your resume.  They are looking specifically at EEEs for internship and fulltime opportunities so take advantage of these events.  These companies have locations around the country so it is also a good opportunity to ask about job locations.  Attending information sessions are a great way to show a company you are very interested in them, talk with employees very interested in your major, and to have more time to connect with company reps than at a career fair.  See more information on both sessions on the attached fliers.  I hope to see you all at both events!

Just want to send this out again as a reminder: Expo is the largest Purdue career fair in the spring semester.  Remember that usually there are some companies that have listed EEE as an option, but there are also good companies that don’t have EEE selected.  To enhance your job search look for companies seeking Environmental Health Sciences and Civil Engineering and see if they do environmental work. Many do!  Please also see my email from earlier this week on some recommendations I have for potential companies outside of EEE to connect with.

FNR Career Fair: The date-Friday Feb 10th from 9:30-3:30pm in person at STEW 214 & 218. It is NOT on the Career Fair Plus app.  A list of employers attending the fair is found here.  A flyer can be found here.   EEE have done well at this fair in the past. It is a smaller fair so generally you can visit companies quickly.  With just a list of companies given by the fair, you’ll have to google their websites to find out information on the company.  Scanning quickly, companies that have hired/have on staff EEEs are American Structurepoint, August Mack, IDEM, IDNR, Lafayette Renew, Lochmueller Group, Metric Environmental, Stantec, US Army Corps of Engineers, V3 Companies.  An EEE alumni will be there for V3 companies and there may be more present.  This is a great fair, especially for those interested in the ecological side of EEE. Do you research on the companies and visit those that interest you.

EEE Combined Degree Program

Environmental and Ecological Engineering, in collaboration with other Purdue departments, schools, and programs offers a combined degree program in which a Purdue student can receive a BS degree, and with one additional year of study, a non-thesis Master’s of Science in Environmental and Ecological Engineering (MSEEE) degree. This is accomplished by dual-counting 12 appropriate course credits at the 500 level on the BS and MSEEE Plans-of-Study.

Students with an overall GPA of 3.25 or better are encouraged to consider applying to the EEE Combined Degree program. Apply during your junior year, generally the 6th semester (or with 2 additional semesters yet to complete the BS degree).  Talk to your EEE Faculty Mentor, your EEE advisor, Prof. John Howarter or email eeegrad@purdue.edu with specific questions.  See the following link for details: https://engineering.purdue.edu/EEE/Academics/CurrentStudents/Graduate/CombinedDegreeProgram.

EEE 48000 Senior Design

Current EEE juniors may be wondering about EEE 48000.  The mainstream senior design course for EEE is EEE 48000. Projects are coordinated, and teams formed, by the instructional team. This year the instructional team is Prof. Nies, Prof. Mulrow, and Ms. Whelton. You can learn more about projects from over the years on the EEE site at Current Undergraduate Students-> Opportunities for Enrichment-> Senior Design
