Purdue, Seoul National University sign LOI to benefit IE grad students

Purdue University and Seoul National University (SNU), Korea, have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to foster international cooperation in education and research within their respective graduate engineering programs.
 
Tompkins ProfessorYuehwern Yih, Earns Prestigious IISE David  F. Baker Award

Yuehwern Yih has been chosen by IISE as the 2024 recipient of the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award.  Yih is the first woman to earn this award, and the first faculty member from the Purdue School of Industrial Engineering since Alan Pritsker (1966), James Solberg (1982), and Bruce Schmeiser (2004).
 
2024 Outstanding Industrial Engineers Honored

The 2024 class of Outstanding Industrial Engineers were recently honored at a banquet that took place in Mackey Arena's Spurgeon Club. This year's class is:


The honorees this year also included members of the class of 2020 that were not able to have an in-person ceremony due to the pandemic.

Honnappa and Aggarwal
Harsha Honnappa and Vaneet Aggarwal earn DEPSCoR Awards ($1.2M)

The two will each receive $600,000 over the next three years for their projects.

Reinforcement Learning for Adaptive Single Photon Imaging in the Sub-Rayleigh Region Through Atmospheric Turbulence ? Vaneet Aggarwal, principal investigator and professor of industrial engineering.

The objective of this project is to develop a quantum-inspired imaging system that captures single-photon light sources using machine learning techniques.

Robust Stochastic Filtering for Shot Noise and Levy Noise Driven Systems ? Harsha Honnappa, principal investigator and associate professor of industrial engineering.

This project will develop rigorous theory and demonstrate novel methodology for computing stochastic filters of dynamical systems driven by processes that don?t follow predictable patterns.
 
Ben Fong Named IISE Fellow

Associate Professor of Practice and Director of the Professional Master's Program, Ben Fong has been named a 2024 IISE Fellow.

Fong is the fifth member of the school's active faculty to earn this honor, joining Barrett Caldwell ('22), Young-Jun Son ('14), Yuehwern Yih ('09), and Shimon Nof ('91).
 
Sivaranjani "Siva" Seetharaman named Outstanding Young Investigator by IISE

Assistant Professor Siva Seetharaman has been selected as the recipient of this year?s Outstanding Young Investigator Award from IISE?s Energy Systems Division.
 
Seetharaman was recently recognized at the IISE Annual Conference and Expo in Montreal, Canada this past May. 
 
Denny Yu named IEA Outstanding Educator, IISE Young Investigator in Applied Ergonomics Research

Denny Yu, associate professor of Industrial Engineering, has been chosen to receive the prestigious Outstanding Educator award from the International Ergonomics & Human Factors Association. 

Yu has been selected for his outstanding contributions to ergonomics and human factors through teaching, mentoring, research, and writing, and will be recognized at the IEA 2024 Congress in August.

In addition to this honor, Yu has also been recognized by the IISE Applied Ergonomics Society (AES) as the 2024 Texas A&M Ergo Center Young Investigator.
 
Professor Vaneet Aggarwal, in addition to earning the DEPSCoR Award, has been named as a University Faculty Scholar.  Aggarwal was recently honored at an awards banquet hosted by the College of Engineering. 

Aggarwal has also been named the 2024 recipient of the William Bennett Prize by the IEEE Communications Society. Aggarwal will be recognized at a formal ceremony in August of this year. 
 
Brad Duerstock and collaborators awarded $1.5M by DOD for development of medical device

Brad Duerstock and collaborators from the Indiana University School of Medicine have received a $1.5M translational research award from the US Department of Defense for the development of a physiological monitoring device for autonomic dysreflexia.

Victoria Houed (BSIE '16) named Tech & Public Policy Visiting Fellow at Georgetown University

This spring Victoria Houed was named a Public Policy Visiiting Fellow at Georgetown University.  Victoria is currently the director of AI policy and strategy at the U.S. Department of Commerce and senior advisor at the POPVOX Foundation. Victoria took some time recently to get us up to speed on what she has been up to since graduating in 2016 in our latest alumni spotlight.

 
Alumni Spotlight: Nadim Sammur (BSIE '20) 

Nadim Sammur, who is an adv. analyst with Invesco, entrepreneur, author, and life coach, recently spoke with IE200 students during the spring semester. Nadim was able to sit down with us and talk about where his IE degree has taken him, how it has helped, and what made him decide on Purdue IE. 

 
Allison Coleman (BSIE '12) named to tED 30 under 35

Industrial Engineering alumna Allie Coleman was selected to tED Magazine's 30 under 35 earlier this year.  Coleman currently serves as director of commercial operations for Prysmian Group's Industrial and Construction Division, and is focused on creating a workplace culture that supports attraction and retention of top talent.  Additionally, Coleman is exploring the long term impact that AI will have on the manufacturing space. 
 
 
 
| NSF POST-QUANTUM AI WORKSHOP
Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering Hosts NSF Funded Post-Quantum AI Workshop

The Purdue School of Industrial Engineering and the National Science Foundation held a 2 day workshop on Post-Quantum AI in Indianapolis. The event featured expert speakers from a variety of industry and academic backgrounds. 

Topics ranged from "Quantum Speedups in Reinforcement Learning" to "AI Meets Quantum State Reconstruction" 

 
| XMO, NAE, HOST SYMPOSIUM
Biller, NAE, co-host NAE Regional Meeting and Workshop

Harold T. Amrine Distinguished Professor and co-chair of the Excellence in Manufacturing Operations (XMO) Initiative Stephan Biller co-hosted the 2024 NAE regional meeting. 

The event brought together key leaders across industry, academia, and government to discuss excellence in igital, physical, and sustainable manufacturing and operations in critical industrial sectors. 

 
GRADUATE STUDENT NEWS
Jackovic, a master's student, is co-advised by Assistant Professor Reem Khir and Isabella Sanders of USMA at West Point. The paper is titled "Financial Risk in Supply Chains: Predicting Bankruptcy in Private Firms Using Public Data" and focuses on bankruptcy as a measure for assessing the financial risk of companies within supply chain networks. 
 
A group of Industrial Engineering graduate students were recently honored by the College of Engineering for their outstanding teaching, service and research efforts. 

 

Professional Master's Program Team Earns Top Honor at Design Expo

The School of Industrial Engineering was well represented at Purdue's 2024 Design Expo as both undergraduate projects and Professional Master's (PMP) projects were presented during the April event, with one PMP team earning the top graduate student award.  The team earned their award for their work with Thermo-Fisher Scientific.
 
Ryan Villareal Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

3rd year PhD student Ryan Villareal has been named an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, and will receive support for his research "Multimodal Physiological Sensing for Team Skill Evaluation in Virtual Reality Simulations."

 
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT NEWS
IE students represent at spring undergraduate research symposium; case competition

This spring students from the School of Industrial Engineering took part in the Sage Memorial Capstone Competition as well as the Purdue Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium and experienced success while facing some very talented competitors.

 
Anjali Dhayagude named MIT Supply Chain Excellence Award Winner

Congratulations to Anjali for this tremendous honor! Anjali is one of twenty seven students across the country to earn this award. 
 
Vikas Devulapalli wins IISE Council of Fellows Scholarship

Devulapalli, who has served as the Purdue IISE Chapter president, was recently named the IISE Council of Fellows Scholarship winner for 2024. 

 
NEW STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
New Clubs!

The School of Industrial Engineering is also pleased to support two of the newest clubs on campus. IE Students Sneha Beedu and Ekene Megwa have started the student organization Women in Industrial and Systems Engineering (WISE), which is "dedicated to fostering and empowering a new generation of Industrial and Systems Engineers."

In addition to this, students from a variety of disciplines have formed a club that focuses on the development of humanoid robots.  The Humanoid Robot Club is mentored by faculty members from various schools and includes IE's assistant professor Yu She.
