Westfield Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

Westfield is a fast-growing community located on the north side of Indianapolis, Indiana. It is served by a 3 million gallons per day (MGD) wastewater plant, which is managed by Citizens Energy Group (CEG), originally constructed in 1997 and expanded in 2004. CEG plans to implement an expansion to the existing plant to increase the average daily flow (ADF) capacity to 6 MGD prior to 2020 but also wishes to evaluate expansion up to a 12 MGD ADF capacity to meet anticipated growth. It is expected that the Westfield system demand will continue to grow requiring a plant with an ADF capacity of 12 MGD by 2035. To prepare for these expansions CEG is initiating a Facility Expansion Plan to evaluate the options to expand the treatment process and solids handling to provide the required capacity.

This study will provide the estimated costs and site layout for two or three expansion options of the treatment process.  A baseline option of continuing to expand the existing activated sludge Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system and a conversion to an activated sludge flow through treatment process or membrane process up to the initial 6 MGD and final 12 MGD ADF capacities.

Senior Design Team update:

The Westfield Wastewater Treatment Plant Team is working with Citizens Energy, (see picture below), to develop three design options for expanding the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant from 3 million gallons per day (MGD) to 6 MGD and 12 MGD in order to meet the demands of Westfield’s rising population. Two of the design options will aim to increase the wastewater treatment plant’s capacity to 6 MGD by 2020 and the third will raise the capacity to 12 MGD by 2035. The basis of the designs includes expanding existing infrastructure, developing an AAO (anaerobic-anoxic-oxic) system, and other potential wastewater treatment techniques.
