Next-Gen Environmental Experts Training (NEXT) - NRT Program

About the NEXT program

Environmental sustainability is vital to human society. Climate change, water scarcity, and declining biodiversity are closely intertwined threats. At the same time, technological solutions require manufacturing capability and steady supplies of materials. The twin threats of declining planetary resilience and U.S. supply chain risks must be addressed by individuals and organizations.

The actions and practices of business enterprises play an outsize role in solving these problems, and therefore, the goal of this project is to develop a graduate program to fulfill an area of national need: integrating environmental sustainability into business.

NextGen Tech & Talent for Enviro Sustainability is a National Research Traineeship (NRT) program in collaboration with North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NC A&T) and Purdue University. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Our Goals

  • Develop and deploy a graduate Traineeship program to fulfill an emerging area of global and national need: integrating environmental sustainability into business.
  • Train Ph.D. students who are:
    • Experts in disciplinary knowledge in a conventional field of engineering
    • Trained in environmental sustainability
    • Prepared for a career in industrial sustainability

How the NEXT Program Works

Program Overview

The NEXT program is offered at Purdue University and North Carolina A&T. Accepted students will be involved in research at both institutions. This collaboration not only increases the number of admitted students, but also increases the breadth of expertise available. The program design provides the same quality and rigor at each university. You only need to apply to one university.

The education and training outcomes are guided by the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) framework, with particular emphasis on “Responsible Business and Economy” and “Environmental Impact Assessment.” The EOP framework is the culmination of 5 years of development, pilot testing, and input. Trainees will complete four components:

  1. An outcomes-based curriculum
  2. Doctoral dissertation
  3. At least one research-based internship experience aligned with the student’s dissertation topic
  4. Formal, explicit training in communication, ethics, and teamwork in a project-based course
