Glass Recycling Feasibility, Cost, and Environmental Impact Analysis

The Tippecanoe Solid Waste Management District (TSWMD) is a government entity that provides recycling and household hazardous waste disposal to Tippecanoe County households. This is done through remote drop off bins throughout the County, as well as bins at the Transfer Station located at 2770 N 9th St, Lafayette. The cost of the recycling program has increased with an increasing population in Tippecanoe and the Chinese National Sword Policy, which lowered the market value for many recyclables in the United States. The cost of transporting materials is a barrier for many municipalities in funding a recycling program.

Glass has always been a challenging material to recycle due to its heavy weight, the decreasing value of glass recyclables, and the heavy contamination that results from co-mingling recyclables with glass.  Other recycling municipalities have made management decisions based on the high cost of transporting heavy glass and the low (sometimes negative) returns on recycling glass.  Nation-wide, glass has been cut from many recycling programs, despite glass being infinitely recyclable.  Glass is also sometimes used as a landfill cover as opposed to being recycled.  Glass that is sorted from the MRF in Indianapolis is then sent to a recycler in Chicago.  There is a closer recycler in Indianapolis, but due to the heavy contamination (mainly shredded paper and plastic bottle caps), the recycler in Indianapolis does not have the facilities to clean the glass of contaminates.  There are other options to re-use and recycle glass that can be explored, both from a financial standpoint and from an environmental standpoint. The group will explore alternative methods to glass recycling, focusing on the glass pulverizer. Pulverized glass can potentially serve as a supplemental aggregate material in construction.
