Linux Firewall Software Making Network Safer

Over the years, several computers on the Engineering Computer Network have been supplemented by firewalls made by various companies. Maintenance problems have resulted from the non-standard hardware, so ECN has started using Linux software to standardize firewalls on computers with outdated operating systems. By implementing the Linux firewall software, groups using the software get security and control of their computing resources, and the rest of Purdue is protected from hacking and liability.
Several research labs around campus require access to computers that run older operating systems, such as windows 95. These older computers, for example, can run software that runs a particular experimental piece of equipment. These older operating systems do not have the same protection built in that currently supported operating systems do, so firewalls are necessary to protect both the individual user's work and the rest of campus from outside interference.
Firewalls protect against hackers, viruses and other attacks. If a firewall is needed and not used, the user could have data compromised, the data could be lost, the computer could be taken over by an outside users, other computers on the Purdue Network could be effected, and Purdue could be held liable for not taking the necessary precautions to protect their network.
In order to protect these computers with insecure operating systems, ECN has been working with Linux firewall software. This software not only provides necessary protection for the information stored on these computers, but it allows for more universal access to data. Users can manage their own machine and not worry too much about administrative duties. The Linux firewall software makes updates and patches easier to take care of, so acting as your own administrator is easier and safer.
If you are currently working on a research project that requires the use of an older operating system or you need to be your own administrator, you may be a candidate for Linux firewall software. Contact ECN for more information.
