From Classroom to Co-Op: My PMP Journey
Gopal Koladia
When I learned about Purdue’s Professional Master’s Program (PMP), I knew it was the next 'Giant Leap' for me. The blend of management, chemical engineering, and specialized electives promised exactly what I wanted: technical growth combined with leadership skills.
My first opportunity emerged when I learned about an industrial Co-Op role in the Continuous Improvement team that instantly sparked my curiosity. Having used their product before, I was eager to dive into the intricacies of its production process. Although the field was new to me, the chance to gain hands-on, real-world experience while still pursuing my degree was an exciting way to apply my theoretical knowledge. This experience not only fueled my passion for the field but also opened doors to further growth, both technically and professionally.
Applying PMP techniques from the classroom to real-world industrial settings was an incredibly rewarding experience. My project management skills enabled me to efficiently lead tasks and meet deadlines, while my engineering background provided the confidence needed for technical discussions. A key project I’m proud of involved developing a safer, more precise method for measuring product properties, directly improving safety for frontline workers. This experience reinforced the immense value of strategic planning, strong teamwork, and personal accountability.
Beyond the technical, I learned the power of networking and teamwork. Industry problems rarely come neatly defined, and success depends on communication, coordination, and persistence.
This co-op has transformed my perspective by bridging theory with practice, constantly pushing me to apply what I learn in ways that create tangible, meaningful impact. My advice to future PMP students is simple: stay positive and be consistent. With that mindset, you will be ready to turn challenges into opportunities.
