Dr. Robert Lucht, the Ralph and Bettye Bailey Professor of Combustion in ME and Professor of Propulsion in the School of AAE (by courtesy), was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

As part of his continued collaboration with Professor James M. Longuski, Apollo astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin visited the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics on October 30-31, 2014. The School was honored to have Dr. Aldrin visit and hold discussions with Dr. Longuski's graduate student research group, Advanced Astrodynamics Concepts.

A group of students has developed a 3D printer for hybrid grains as part of the spring 2014 AAE 535 Propulsion Design, Build, Test course. The course, taught by Dr. Timothee Pourpoint, associate professor in AAE, is intended to provide students with information on the design requirements, standard methods, and tools to develop propulsion systems.

Items representing Purdue University's contributions to flight and space history flew onboard last week's first test of Orion from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex. Purdue is the alma mater of 23 NASA astronauts. Items included a photo of Neil Armstrong (BSAAE'55, DEA'67, HDR'70, OAE'99) and Eugene Cernan (BSEE'56, HDR'70, OECE'92).

A team of students led by faculty advisor Dr. John Sullivan, professor of aerodynamics in Purdue University's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, was awarded Best Overall in the inaugural ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge on November 15, 2014.

Purdue University Libraries' Division of Archives and Special Collections will host a special open house for grade school children to learn about space history and explore the exhibit "Steps to the Moon: Selections from the Neil A. Armstrong Papers and the Eugene A. Cernan Papers" on Saturday (Dec. 6) and Jan. 17.

Purdue University's College of Engineering has named four pre-eminent teams to focus on research ranging from drug delivery to nanomanufacturing. One of the four teams is headed by and comprised of School of Aeronautics and Astronautics faculty members: Dr. Sergey Macheret; Dr. Alina Alexeenko; and Dr. Sally Bane. Team members Dr. Timothy Fisher and Dr. Robert Lucht, professors of Mechanical Engineering, are faculty members in the School of AAE by courtesy.

Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics will host a watch party for the launch of NASA's Orion spacecraft on Thursday, December 4, 2014. The public is invited to attend the party beginning at 4:30 am in Kurz Atrium of Armstrong Hall. The launch is expected at 7:05 am.

Purdue University's Milad Alucozai has been chosen as one of only 12 U.S. students to receive the nationally prestigious Mitchell Scholarship for graduate study in Ireland. He is Purdue's first Mitchell Scholarship recipient. To win this award, Alucozai proved extraordinary commitment to scholarship, leadership and community service.

Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics undergraduate student Emily Zimovan was presented with the Women in Aerospace (WIA) Foundation and ATK Scholarship at the 29th Annual Women in Aerospace Awards on October 29, 2014. The awards ceremony took place at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.
