His early work on engine nacelles and nozzles, his initiation and guidance in hydrofoil design, and, more recently, his financial management of the billion-dollar 747 project have won much favorable attention for Mr. Bateman. His leadership in raising funds to build homes for and improve the environment of South Vietnamese Navy families resulted in increased morale and helped expedite the withdrawal of U.S. forces. For this, the Navy awarded Mr. Bateman the Distinguished Public Service Citation
