Abstract
The International Space Station is NASA’s prime research and technology development platform that is enabling humans to safely and productively go from LEO to destination beyond, including cislunar space and onto Mars. Mr. Scimemi will present an overview of the research and technology development being conducted onboard the ISS in the fields of human health and performance, life support system, and other systems that are essential to human spaceflight that are directly tied to NASA’s Journey to Mars.
Bio
Mr. Scimemi is the Director for International Space Station (ISS) at NASA Headquarters within the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. His duties consist of ensuring safe and productive ISS operations and utilization, implementing policy and programmatic direction, and communicating progress and issues with the White House and Congress. He is also the NASA liaison to the ISS National Laboratory implementing organization, the Center for the Advancement of Science In Space (CASIS).
Mr. Scimemi has been a leader in human spaceflight for 30 years. He has worked in both the civil service and private industry, and his experience spans human spaceflight, Earth and space science. His background includes development and testing of complex space systems, real-time operations and project management. He has been employed at four NASA centers: Johnson Space Center, Ames Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Headquarters. His career has encompassed several major NASA programs including the Space Shuttle, ISS, Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), and the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory Project (NPP) programs, among others.
