Abstract
This presentation talks about the research being done at Cal Poly Pomona on increased autonomy of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Despite their potential use for many applications, they have not yet seen widespread usage. The lack of sufficient level of autonomy has prevented the mass deployment of UAVs for many applications such as agriculture, search and rescue, traffic monitoring, package delivery, etc. One of the focus areas of the ongoing UAV research at Cal Poly Pomona is on increasing the autonomy of these vehicles. Research projects include intelligent flight controls, collision and obstacle avoidance, and command and control of multiple unmanned vehicles. The developed methods are implemented and tested on realistic application scenarios. Efforts on training future generation of engineers and scientists for careers in unmanned vehicles technologies will also be presented.
Bio
Dr. Subodh Bhandari is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona and the Director of its Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Lab. He has been actively involved in research and education on unmanned systems. His current research emphasis is on increased autonomy of UAVs and command and control of multiple unmanned vehicles. Dr. Bhandari leads a large team of faculty and students from several departments within the Colleges of Engineering and Science. His projects have been funded by several external grants from federal agencies and aerospace industry.
