Meet Alumni: D. Erich Wurz

Graduated from Purdue: May 1984 (BSNE)

I have worked in the nuclear utility industry for close to 32 years since graduation. I have worked for Commonwealth Edison / Exelon for all 32 of those years. In my tenure with Exelon, I have served in a variety of positions including:

Reactor Engineer (Byron Nuclear Power Station) – June 1984 through May 1987

Highlights include participating in the initial start-up physics testing and Initial Criticality for both Byron Unit 1 and Unit 2 reactors.

Corporate Staff Engineer (Chicago) – June 1987 through August 1989

Primary function in this role was to serve the Vice Presidents in the Nuclear Generation Division through various special projects focusing on plant operations and engineering.

Human Performance Engineer (Byron Station) – September 1989 through May 1995

Through formal training by the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), I developed and implemented the human performance improvement initiatives at Byron Station. One of the skill sets I learned in this role was conducting formal root cause analyses involving human performance. I continue to utilize this skill having performed over 125 formal human performance investigations as well as organizational and programmatic improvement assessments.

Independent Safety Engineer (Byron Station) – June 1995 through April 1997

In this role, my position involved overseeing the nuclear operations with a focus on nuclear safety through the Quality Assurance Department.

Nuclear Fuels Project Manager (Downers Grove, IL) – May 1997 through August 2000

Through this position, I coordinated and managed the various design, licensing, safety analysis, and fuel reliability projects associated with reload core management for Exelon’s three PWR stations (Byron, Braidwood, and Zion).

Nuclear Fuel Reliability Engineer (Warrenville, IL) – September 2000 through August 2009

My primary role involved fuel reliability for the PWR fuel at Exelon. Working with the fuel vendors, my primary function was to ensure the nuclear fuel performed as designed with no fuel failures during operation. In this position, I helped implement fuel performance and chemistry initiatives and also coordinated irradiated fuel inspections.

Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing Oversight (Warrenville, IL) – September 2009 through Present

In my current position, I am responsible for overseeing the manufacturing of nuclear fuel and core components for all 23 of Exelon’s nuclear reactors. Through on-site visits around the world with the main fuel vendors and their component sub-suppliers, I provide technical oversight of the manufacturing to help ensure fuel reliability at our facilities. In addition to fuel manufacturing oversight, this position also is responsible for the oversight of spent nuclear fuel dry storage container manufacturing.

Other Information:

In the mid-90s, I was fortunate enough to have the time to lead two separate organizations in the Rockford, IL area. First, I was the President of the Winnebago County Young Republicans organization for two years. Following that, I was able to briefly serve as President of the Purdue Alumni Club of Rockford, IL until my job transfer into the Chicago area.

I currently serve on my college fraternity’s (Alpha Kappa Lambda) Corporate Alumni Board as one of the Directors. I have been on the Board since 2007.

Family Information:

I have been married since 1991 to Janice A. Wurz (Boston University alumnus). We have two daughters – both of whom are in college. Lexi, our oldest, is a Senior at the University of Iowa. Lindsey, our youngest is a Freshman at Purdue University.
