Team mentored by Siva Seetharaman awarded runner-up in the SAS Curiosity Cup Data Analysis Competition

The team earned second place for their project titled "Predicting EV Charging Demand: A Novel Approach Utilizing Traffic Flows"

Team  (L-R) Jaewon (Jae) Cho, Hyunjun (Jared) Park, Byung Wook (Wooky) Kim, and Hyunsang (Ethan) Cho pose with James J. Solberg Head and Ransburg Professor Dr. Young-Jun Son (3rd from left) and Assistant Professor Sivaranjani "Siva" Seetharaman (3rd from right) who was the team's faculty mentor.

The Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) Operations Research Solutions (ORSOL) team faced competition from 107 teams representing 19 countries.  In all there were over 300 students involved, making the competition very diverse and competitive.

The ORSOL team consists of Byung Wook (Wooky) Kim, Hyunjun (Jared) Park, Hyunsang (Ethan) Cho, and Jaewon (Jae) Cho (all ECE), who represented the team at the competition, as well as Spencer Gries and Ryan Hsieh (ECE), Kisal Wijesooriya (Math/Stat), and Zach Witek (Data Analytics).

The project addresses a gap in the availability of granular public data regarding demand at EV charging stations. This scarcity of data makes it difficult to reliably predict demand for EV charging stations. The team's approach "uniquely leverages insights into seasonal variations and a deeper understanding of human driver behavior, moving beyond traditional models."

The team worked with Renee Chang, a junior in Computer Graphics Technology, who was heavily involved in the video production for the competition. The video, embedded below, gives excellent details regarding their approach to solving the problem of increasing demand in EV charging.
