The GIRS three minute thesis competition was open to graduate students whose research was related to sustainability. Pekarek describes his research succintly as analyzing "the robustness of long term infrastructure upgrades for the Department of Defense in the face of rising sea levels." According to his abstract, Annapolis has seen over a foot of relative sea level increase since 1929.

The GIRS three-minute thesis competition is very similar to the Graduate School three-minute thesis competition, with the exception that this particular competition is limited to research that relates to sustatinability.

Pekarek was chosen as one of 8 finalists earlier this year and practiced his talk frequently prior to the competition.
