Adding/Dropping Courses

Courses can be added and dropped (subject to restrictions) at various points throughout each semester.

A note from your advisor

Adding and dropping courses can allow a student to increase the flexibility of their schedule, gain entry into classes that might have been previously unavailable, or allow for students to reduce their workload, etc. Adding and/or dropping classes should not be taken lightly; as such, you are strongly suggested to consult with Elizabeth or Dr. Brunese before making changes to your schedule. This will aid in preventing any potential issues regarding progress within the major, graduation, etc. As always, it is the student's responsibility to ensure they meet graduation requirements.

On-Campus vs. Distance Learning courses

Purdue offers many different alternatives for taking a great variety of classes. The method of offering a class is imperative in determining the correct way to add the course to your schedule. This is especially true for distance learning course offerings.

Registering for a Purdue originated distance learning course is the same as registering for a regularly offered course. To identify if a course is distance learning a student should consult the "Look Up Classes" section of myPurdue. Under each listing for a course there is a "Type" column that will read "Distance Learning" if the course is offered online. Any Purdue originated online course is subject to the same add/drop rules that govern a regularly offered Purdue course.

If you are interested in distance learning courses, please speak with your academic advisor.

An important note about "W" grades

A withdrawal grade (W, WF, or WN) doesn't technically have a negative effect on your academic standing at Purdue. They are not actual grades, so they cannot have an impact on your GPA. However, too many withdrawal grades can affect your financial aid status (policy). In addition, evidence of frequent withdrawal grades can reflect negatively on you in the eyes of employers and other evaluators of your academic record. In addition, regardless of whether or not you retake and complete a course in which you previously earned a withdrawal grade, the withdrawal grade will remain in your academic record permanently.
