Second-year MSEEE graduate student Jordan Cross received first place for her poster presentation in the Technical Talk Expo at the 49th annual National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE) Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

“This was my first poster presentation at an engineering conference, so to win first place is an honor. I think speaks highly to my education in Purdue EEE,” says Jordan.

The Technical Research Exhibition (TRE) is designed to showcase the technical accomplishments and technical communication skills of NSBE members. The competition provides an opportunity for undergraduate students, graduate students, and technical professionals to present their research findings and learn from their peers.

Jordan’s poster was based on a team-based project aimed at developing a controlled environmental olfaction chamber. Jordan studied how volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from household and personal care products contribute and impact indoor atmospheric chemistry. The goal is to characterize these VOCs as well as quantify their impact on human health, physically and mentally. This chamber is the key to studying these VOCs in an inert environment.

Purdue EEE courtesy faculty members Professor Nusrat Jung (Civil) and Professor Brandon Boor (Civil) are Jordan’s co-advisors for her MSEEE thesis, and she will be continuing as a PhD student as a Purdue Civil Engineering Carver Fellow in their research groups.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. Founded in 1975 at Purdue University, NSBE supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology.
