Olson Design Lab Information
The Olson Lab was upgraded during the summer of 2012 to 17 new Dell OptiPlex 7010 with an Intel Core i7, 3.4Ghz quad core CPU, 8GB Ram, and a 22" LCD monitors. The systems are all connected to a network switch at 100 Mb/s and the switch has a 1Gb/s uplink to the Purdue network. The file server for senior design is bridge.ecn.purdue.edu.
CIVL 1212 Lab
The Civil Computing Lab, CIVL 1212, is also setup just like the Olson Lab. You will find the same software in both labs and you can also use your team accounts in CIVL 1212.
Olson Lab Schedule
The Olson Lab opens at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters. During the first week of class it is only open from 8am to 5pm. Starting the second Monday of the semester, the lab follows the hours in the table below. If that Monday happens to be a holiday such as Labor or Martin Luther King, Jr day, it starts on the second Tuesday of the semester. For any holidays or breaks, the lab is closed during those days and it closes the weekend leading into that break such as Spring and October break. For Thanksgiving break, the lab closes at 5pm on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. During finals week, the lab is only open from 8am to 5pm and closes for the semester on the Friday of finals week.

- The printers CIVL3154H1 and CIVL1212H1 are already installed locally on the Olson Lab PCs.
If you change any settings or preferences or put shortcuts on the desktop, when you log out, the settings are saved in your Windows profile. The profile is saved to the N: drive of the team account on BRIDGE. Each team will have one account for all members to use.
When more than one of person logs in with your team account, the LAST one to log out will have the settings saved to the profile.
Settings that are saved in the profile:
- Office preferences
- Network printers that you installed
Each group will have 10 GB of disk space to store files. You will not be able to store files on the local hard disk of the PCs. When you login, you will find a drive call N:\ which is mapped to your team's account on BRIDGE.
Make sure you save all of your files to the N:\ drive. Any files left on the PC's internal C: drive are deleted.
The team account has an ECN print quota of $50 pages. It is for printing senior design related documents.
Bridge will be backed up each night, so if you lose a file that was there the night before, it can be restored from backups.
Accessing Team files from home or the ITaP Lab
The ITaP labs have the ability to allow network connections to machines using different logins and passwords. You can now map a network drive to BRIDGE and connect using your team accounts.

You can also map your team account from your personal ECN account in the CIVL 1212 lab.
If you do this from an off campus computer, you will need to configure and connect to the ITaP VPN service. For more information, see this web page: ITaP VPN Service.
Scanner and Video Capture
The Olson Lab has one PC with an HP ScanJet, VCR, video capture card and video editing software.
- NO food or drinks in lab.
- Put books and drawing away after use.
- Do as the lab consultants ask.
- The consultant has the right to kick you out for not following the rules or being disruptive.
Printing Posters and AutoCAD Drawings
Set the PowerPoint slide to the actual size that you want it to print out, ie 24"X36", using File -> Page Setup. Then you can add correct size text and photos. An 8.5"X11" powerpoint slide enlarged to 36X48, will have text with jagged edges and photos will look very grainy and distorted.
Presentations on Laptops
Use a USB memory stick to transfer your presentation to the local hard drive of the laptop. Run your presentation from the hard drive. This will prevent long pauses in your presentation while large images are loaded from the removable media.
Team Account Email
To read email in your team account, use the ECN Webmail client: http://webmail.ENGR.purdue.edu/
Enter your team login and password, then select bridge from the server list.
