Current year: Senior

As a captain of the Purdue ASCE Seismic Design Team, Lainie competes against universities from all around the world.
Why I chose Purdue Civil and Construction Engineering
I have always been really interested in skyscrapers and other large structures. Growing up near Chicago, I loved to see all the tall buildings and wanted to be part of a team one day that constructed them. Purdue University has an incredibly strong engineering program, so once I was sure that is what I wanted to pursue, I knew where I was going to apply.
Emphasis area
My emphasis area is in structural engineering. I’ve always loved studying skyscrapers, and now that I am in the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering, I have also grown to love all sorts of structural designs. Being able to use math, science, and art to create something special is what I love to do.

Laine says she's always had an interest in structures and wanted to be part of a design team.
Seismic Design Leader
I am a captain on Purdue ASCE’s Seismic Design Team. Being on the team has been one of my favorite experiences while at Purdue. Every year, the organization sets up a challenge, and we must design a structure that can withstand it. We compete against teams from the around the world and it’s a unique collaborative experience.
After I graduate
After I earn my Bachelor’s degree next year, I will be staying for one more year to earn my Master’s through Purdue Civil Engineering’s 4+1 Program. I am excited to gain more experience and a deeper understanding of civil engineering before I pursue my career.

One of the aspects Lainie says she likes most about civil engineering is how collaborative the profession is.
