Construction Engineering

Construction Engineers help build a better world by designing, planning and managing structures such as highways, bridges, airports, railroads, buildings, dams and reservoirs. Construction of such projects requires knowledge of engineering management principles and business procedures, economics and human behavior. Construction engineers engage in the design of structures along with cost estimating, materials procurement, equipment selection and apply science with engineering methods.

Construction Engineering faculty prepare students to practice as professional engineers and managers in the diverse construction industry. This includes research and education opportunities in discrete event simulation, 3D animation, virtual reality of construction operations, augmented reality, construction safety (CSA and NIOSH organizations), emerging construction technologies, and multimedia development for construction.

Dulcy Abraham receives inaugural Advancement of Women in Construction Award

Dulcy Abraham, Professor of Civil Engineering, is the inaugural recipient of the ASCE Construction Institute Advancement of Women in Construction Award for excellence as a construction academic in the areas of teaching, research, and service, and demonstrated support, guidance, mentoring, and promotion of growth opportunities for the advancement of women in the construction profession.

Hubo Cai receives 2023 ASCE Alfred Noble Prize

Hubo Cai, Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management and Interim Head of the School of Construction Management Technology, has received the 2023 Alfred Noble Prize awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for his paper, "Robust Hybrid Approach of Vision-Based Tracking and Radio-Based Identification and Localization for 3D Tracking of Multiple Construction Workers," published in Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, July 2020.

Research team awarded $2 million NSF grant to enable diverse workforce participation in construction industry through human-AI partnerships

Sogand Hasanzadeh, assistant professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Division of Construction Engineering and Management, along with a team of researchers at Purdue University and George Mason University, have received a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to address fundamental questions regarding the risk-taking behavior and cognitive processes of workers with neurodiversity in the construction industry through interdependent human-AI partnerships.

Sogand Hasanzadeh receives ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award

Sogand Hasanzadeh, assistant professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Division of Construction Engineering and Management, has received the Thomas Glavinich ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award. The six-month Early Career Award study, Examining a Latent Side-Effect of Electrical Safety Interventions among T&D Line Workers, will utilize an immersive mixed-reality combined with wearable sensors to empirically examine the risk perception and risk-taking behavior of T&D line workers as a function of the number and type of fall and electrical safety interventions in place for their protection.
